Bikini Atol By the early 1940s were two-piece bathing suits often on American shores. Hollywood stars as Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner tried similar swimwear and beachwear. Historians assume Reard termed his Swimsuit the "bikini" because he believed its revealing style would create reactions among people similar to those created by the u.s. atomic bomb in Japan just a summer in the past.
